Backpack Blessings from the Community
Back Blessings from the Community originally starts as a community partnership between Richmond Community Schools and the Methodist Church in Richmond.  Since its inception, many other organizations has assisted in this partnership through monetary and food donations as well as offering volunteers

Each week, volunteers stuff the backpacks full of food to feed families on the weekend.  The backpacks are filled according to the number of people and ages in the household and include enough food for breakfast, lunch and dinner on the weekends.

School social worker, Nancy Laratonda, gathers the names of families in need and works with the volunteers to provide the families with a backpack of food for the weekend.  Backpacks are delivers to the main office of school the child attends for them to pick up or they are delivered by volunteers to the students’ home.   The list of families in need is kept strictly confidentially by Ms. Laratonda.

In the summer when school was is not in session, the families may pick up their back packs full of food from the Board of Education Office.  If they were unable to pick them up, volunteers from the church delivered them to the homes.

While non-perishable food for the Backpack Blessings from the Community program are kept at Richmond High School where volunteers fill backpacks, donation bins are available in the lobbies or main office at each school for the community to make donations.

If you would like more information, please call the District's Community Liaison & Public Relations Secretary at (586) 727-3565, ext. 6011.
